GBA JOURNAL / MATCH PREPARATION

Learning from practice matches

A practice match can be useful even when you do not win. It gives you situations to discuss with your coach and helps you identify what deserves more practice.

Make it practical.

Choose one focus before playing. After the game, recall a few specific moments instead of making a broad judgement about your ability. Ask your coach how those moments relate to your current training goals.

Your session checklist

  • Agree on the format before play begins.
  • Respect your opponent and keep an honest score.
  • Discuss a few specific rallies afterwards.

A useful next step

Take one lesson back into training so the match becomes part of your development.
