Reading a progress report as a conversation starter

A progress report is most useful when you understand what its observations mean. It should help families and players discuss the current training focus and practical next steps.

Make it practical.

Ask how each area is assessed and what examples support the feedback. Consider attendance and the time spent practising that skill. Avoid treating one report as a permanent description of a child’s ability.

Your session checklist

  • Clarify unfamiliar terms in the report.
  • Ask for a practical example of improvement.
  • Agree on the next training focus.

A useful next step

Use the report to continue a conversation with the coach, then revisit it after an agreed period.
